Twenty-one WSS staffers traveled with Little Hawk reporters to Chicago for the 2018 National Scholastic Press Association Convention (NSPA) on Wednesday, Oct. 31. After their arrival, staffers went on a ghost tour around haunted spots in the city before starting convention activities Thursday, Nov. 1.

On Nov. 1, staffers visited various media outlets in the Chicago area including Chicago Sun TimesNBC Sports Chicago and Bloomberg. Others attended workshops for photography, art and design.

The convention officially started Thursday evening with a keynote speech from Pete Souza, photographer for the Obama administration. Friday, Nov. 2 students will attend break out sessions at the Hyatt Regency Center for leadership, design, reporting, photography and entrepreneurship. Both West Side Story and Little Hawk staffers attended a show at The Second City comedy club Friday night before returning home on Saturday, Nov. 3.

As WSS traveled home Nov. 3 they received news that they had won a Pacemaker award, a national award and highest honor a publication can receive.
